In 2017, a group of committed youth leaders and student representatives from five migrant education centers in Mae Sot came together with a shared vision—to create a safe, supportive space where young people could learn, lead, and contribute to their communities. This vision gave life to the Rays of Youth (ROY) Youth Network Group, a youth-led initiative supported by Help Without Frontiers.
The network was established to recognize the potential of migrant youth and empower them to become active problem-solvers. Each year, around 50 young people participate in leadership training designed to build their confidence, skills, and commitment to social development.
Today, the network includes 28 active members, aged 17 to 22, from diverse ethnic backgrounds—mainly Burmese and Karen migrants from Myanmar. New members are selected through an application and interview process. Once accepted, they join focus teams such as Awareness Raising, Media & Communications, and Campaign Design, where they collaborate to create meaningful impact.
Over the years, these young leaders have led peer-to-peer learning sessions, door-to-door outreach, and National Youth Day campaigns, raising awareness on key topics such as online safety, human trafficking, mental health, identity rights, and drug prevention. Their efforts include community training, public speaking, and the production of youth-friendly media.
“I used to avoid public speaking,” says Nyo Mi Win, a third-year youth network member. “But after joining ROY, I found my voice. I’ve learned to lead, support others, and make a difference in my community.”
“My journey of change began with the Youth Leadership Training. I was once shy and unsure of myself. But I gained confidence, improved my communication in Thai and English, and learned to design awareness content. That growth is one of my biggest successes.”
— Htin Kyaw Khant, Youth Leader
“I used to fear leadership and public interaction. But with guidance from mentors and daily practice, I overcame those fears. I gained new life skills, built confidence, and learned responsibility. Now, I lead trainings, co-create videos, and work closely with other youth to make a difference.”
— Aung Thy Bo, Youth Leader
Help Without Frontiers continues to support the group through training, mentorship, and funding for youth-led activities, including campaign planning, media production, and community engagement.
As a result, youth members have become confident individuals who continue to serve their communities. They carry the values of leadership, teamwork, and compassion wherever they go.
Looking ahead, the ROY Youth Network aims to grow stronger, reach more youth, and encourage meaningful youth participation. Despite challenges such as limited time and language barriers, these young leaders are learning to adapt and work together toward a better future.
Because when youth grow, communities grow with them.
