In mid-June 2018, the area in and around Mae La refugee camp, located north-west Thailand, was hit by days of heavy rain. On 17 June 2018, some areas of the camp were flooded and many temporary buildings reported heavy damages. In the days following the flood, the Mae La camp Committee conducted house-by-house survey in order to assess the substantial damages and needs. The total number of home most severely affected by the flood was difficult to estimate. However, authorities inside the camp reported that 111 homes were severely damaged, with a population of 515 persons.
The flood destroyed livelihoods and, in most cases, households lost all their belongings. The streets were covered with mud, plastic and broken glasses, forcing the population inside the camp to days and weeks of cleaning.
Help without Frontiers supports Tha Kaw Kla dorm inside Mae La refugee camp. The dorm offers to 53 unaccompanied children and youth a safe place to live and study.
On 17 June 2018, as soon as Help without Frontiers was informed about the flood, an urgent call for donation was launched to respond to the emergency. Help without Frontiers received over 37,000 THB in monetary donations that were spent to buy dry food, drinking water, hygiene sets, medicines, and cleaning tools. Moreover, many individuals, shops, and organisations in and around Mae Sot provided generous in-kind donations.
In the weeks following the flood, Help without Frontiers coordinated with COERR so as to deliver the donations to the students in Tha Kaw Kla dorm and to other households in need.
