At Help Without Frontiers, we believe that every child deserves a safe environment in which to grow.  So, we initiated the Child-Friendly Space (CFS) in 2022—to support migrant children at critical times like the COVID-19 pandemic and the crisis in Myanmar.

Most migrant kids have no formal schooling, no safe play area, and no emotional support. CFS bridges the gap by designing to respond to the needs of children who often lack access to formal education and safe recreational areas

What makes CFS unique?

  • Prevention from harm: CFS provides a protective environment to protect out-of-school migrant children from early marriage, child labor, and exploitation.
  • Psychosocial well-being and emotional resilience: Activities promote emotional healing, resilience, and a sense of belonging.
  • Inclusive learning opportunities: CFS offers basic Burmese language literacy and life skills training for children without formal education.
  • Empowerment and child development: Interactive games, discussions, and creative activities help children express themselves, develop confidence, and form positive relationships.
  • Community trust and support: CFS fosters trust between children, parents, and trainers, providing a supportive community.

One young participant shared, ““I’ve noticed a significant improvement in my emotional control. I used to overthink everything I did or said to others. Now, even when I feel angry, I’m much better at controlling my emotions than I was before."

The parents have also noticed the difference. One parent said, ""We feel safe when we come to the CFS centers and truly appreciate the opportunity for our children to learn and play in such a secure environment. We kindly request the organization to include us in future activities at the centers. Participating in the awareness sessions has been very beneficial for us. We become aware of how to support our children.""

Real Impact, Real Change

Since its opening, CFS has developed 9 centers, 4 of which are mobile units that cater to children in hard-to-reach areas. Evening school classes have been a resounding success, especially for those who cannot attend school on a full-time basis. Families now see CFS as a secure community center—where kids learn, parents mingle, and everyone is welcomed.

What's Next?

To serve more children, we need to grow. That will involve:

  • Expending home-based learning for out-of-school children Offering vocational training for youth in CFS communities
  • Providing  ICT and computer trainings
  • Equipping parents with tools to support learning and early childhood development at home

By 2025, our goal is to provide migrant children with even more transformative chances so they not only survive but flourish.

Because every child deserves a safe space to dream, learn, and shine.
