Migrant teachers in learning centres follow the curriculum officially approved by the Myanmar Ministry of Education. As such, every year, they receive refreshment trainings through which they can acquire knowledge on the changes of the curriculum and ensure their teaching methods are up to date and in line with the standards inside the country.
In mid-May 2019, a total of 47 teachers from the 14 learning centres overseen by Help without Frontiers joined two-week training inside Myanmar facilitated by the Ministry of Education. A group of teachers from Grade 3 went to Myawaddy while another group of teachers of Grade 6 attended the training in Kawkareik.
During the intensive training, teachers were informed of the reforms of the programs of the ten subjects included in Grade 3 and Grade 6 classes. Thanks to the knowledge they acquired, they have improved their ability to teach and handle the classrooms.
Help without Frontiers greatly encourages and supports teacher trainings that are meant to expand their sets of teaching and pedagogical skills so as to increase the quality of migrant education towards a child-centred model of education. Most importantly, the alignment of teaching methods and educational standards in learning centres in Mae Sot with the ones of public schools inside Myanmar is crucial for ensuring migrant children can access recognised pathways to education. Once they have successfully finished their studies in Thailand, they will have the chance, if and when they will go back to Myanmar, to access the formal system of Education in their home country and hope for a brighter future.
