School uniforms are compulsory in Myanmar as well as in Thailand, at all levels of education. For Burmese migrant children, the school uniform is much more than clothes, it’s a symbol for identity, protection and safety. Those migrant children who wear a school uniform are showing that they belong somewhere and that someone is waiting for them at the school. As such, the school uniform is a shield against human traffickers, arbitrary arrest by the police, and other dangers to which street children are exposed.
Every school year, Help without Frontiers is providing almost 3,500 Burmese students with school uniforms, ensuring they can attend migrant schools safely.
My name is Mu Pionk and I come from Hpa-an, Myanmar. In 2008, my family and I fled Myanmar as the war had made our lives there unbearable. I’ve been living in Mae Sot since then. Today I’m enrolled in Grade 4 at Parami school. I like my school uniform because it shows everybody that I’m a student. I’m very proud of it!
